Las Casa del Capitan on Whale Hill

Spectacular View of the Sea of Cortez

Perched high on Whale Hill in the heart of the shrimp market shopping district of Rocky Point, La Casa del Capitan restaurant has one of the most spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez and Sandy Beach in all of Puerto Peñasco. On a clear, late afternoon, as the sun sets to the west in late september, dinner guests are awash in rays of light emanating from behind the mountain range of the Baja Peninsula.

Views of the Sea of Cortez

Established in 1993 by the Garcia Family, the first stone of La Casa del Capitan was laid in 1990. 15 years later diners are treated to spectacular views, a vibrant atmosphere, and authentic Mexican food. Guests can choose between indoor seating with colorful decor or outdoor seating with 180 degree views of the Sea of Cortez, the shrimp market, old port and the city of Puerto Peñasco. I would recommend taking a table out side.  In the late morning or early afternoon, the sun has not hit the west side of the restaurant, making for a very relaxing and comfortable dining experience.  We highly recommend it for lunch.

Shrimp Dishes are Specialties

On the menu are chile relleno’s, enchiladas rancheras and camarones thermidor. Sea food, and in particular shrimp dishes, are the speciality of La Casa del Capitan.  Butterfly shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp with cheese, shrimp in a wine sauce are just a few of the Shrimp dish to treat yourself.  Watch out for the margaritas.  They pack a punch.  Let someone else do the driving on the way home or take a taxi and enjoy yourself.

Getting to the restaurant is easy once you know how to get to the top of Whale Hill.  To get to La Casa del Capitan take Hwy 8(Blvd. Benito Juarez), the main road through town, past Blvd. Fremount.  Once you come around the bend near the port make a left onto a dirt road.  The road is just to the left of the liquor store.  Take the dirt road all the way to the hop of Whale Hill, pass the new Solace Tower Condominium development.  Once at the top you will find the Light House Restaurant and la Casa del Capitan.

Steph and I recommend you give la Casa del Capitan a try.
Happy eating in Rocky Point
