Duncan and Gus Brown
Sandy Beach Resorts has a long history in the town of Puerto Penasco.  Purchased in 1940 by Duncan Brown, a Mexican Citizen of American descent, the 3,374 acres of land located just northwest of Rocky Point, was originally owned by the Mexican Federal Government. Duncan would travel regularly to the Sonoran Capital of Hermosilio. While en route by way of train, Duncan passed through the quaint little fishing village of Puerto Penasco where he met the white sandy beaches on the Sea of Cortez. Upon his death, Duncan’s widow sold the land to her brother-in-law Gus Brown, Sr. in 1956.

Electricity Came to Cholla Bay
As Americans, particularly from Arizona, discovered this little known paradise, they would bring their boats to what is now known as Cholla Bay. They would lease land from Brown, Sr., and eventually build boat houses and homes.  In 1985 Gus Brown, Sr. sold the land to his son Gus Brown, Jr.,  Chollas Bay was subdivided into 1,268 lots in 1995 of which 800 have been sold.  Until this time there had been no electricity or telephone service to the community.  The Junior Brown son brought electricity to the community in 1997 and eventually bought an additional 2,433 acres in 1999.

Cholla Bay’s Growth
Since then Cholla bay has grown to include the development of Sandy Beach Master Planned Community that includes condominiums and custom built homes.  Lot’s are still available in the original Cholla Bay development and are priced according to size and proximity to the water.  Utilities include electric, septic and phone.  Water is trucked in and propane can be delivered.  Roads are compacted dirt and many of the lots remaining have views of the bay.  Most of the ocean front lots have already been developed and are available for resale from private owners. Parts of the master planned community currently under development include the Esmereld and Casablanca Golf Villas.

Homes Include Domed Ceilings
Casablanca Golf Condominiums and Villas are located in the general vicinity just south of Cholla Bay along Sandy Beach.  Casablanca Golf Villas are individual, semi-custom homes located on a putting golf course with view of the Sea of Cortez.  Homes include domed brick ceilings in bedroom and living room, upstair patio with ocean views, barbeque and Jacuzzi.  The Condominiums of Casablanca are 2,3,4 bedrooms along with several penthouses.  None of the lots or condos are ocean front.  The Casablanca community includes 4 pools, spas, 5 acre park, running track, and workout facility. Prices for the condos start at S300,000 and prices for the semi custom homes begin at $1.1 million.

The Esmereld is Located between Casablanca Golf Villas and Cholla bay along Sandy Beach.  Starting at $500,000 dollars the Esmereld has 281 condominiums ranging from 1700 square feet livable space to over 7,000.  Amenities include 3 swimming pools, jacuzzis, island pool area, swim-up bar and underground parking.  Building a, b, and c are sold out with building D now accepting sales.
